Formative Assessment & Differentiated Instruction 

Are your students really paying attention and achieving your unit objectives? How do you know? A teacher may have a well-designed unit plan and a whole arsenal of innovative teaching methodologies but these alone will not guarantee that students will actually learn the content and master the skills. To do this, you will need formative assessment and differentiated instruction (FA + DI). These are high-impact teaching approaches because they give teachers evidence-based information about their students’ progress DURING the instructional process so that the teachers can ensure that no child is left behind. In this workshop, find out how you can make sure that all students are on track to achieving your unit objectives and find out how simple it can be to design and deliver good FA + DI !

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

1. Explain why assessment is central to teaching and learning;

2. Explain common sense uses of formative assessment to identify the learning needs of students;

3. Apply Fisher and Frey’s Formative Assessment System to design and implement formative assessments;

4. Identify techniques in checking for understanding throughout the delivery of instruction;

5. Reflect on some of the common sense principles of differentiated instruction; and

6. Identify techniques that can be used to differentiate a unit to address learner variability.
