This workshop empowers educators to unlock their potential as 21st-century educators by integrating place-based learning and memory work into their pedagogical toolkit. Participants will explore how sites of memorialization, for instance, those related to the Martial Law era, for instance – such as historical landmarks, museums, and monuments – can be transformed into powerful spaces for critical engagement with Philippine history.

Through collaborative sessions, educators will learn to design meaningful “historical trips” tailored to their learners. These trips go beyond sightseeing; they are scaffolded experiences with clear learning objectives, pre- and post-tour lessons, compelling narratives, guide questions, and student tasks. Participants will also present their own comprehensive historical trip plans, integrating historical thinking skills, reflective learning, and logistical considerations.

By the end of the workshop, teachers will gain practical tools to make history more resonant and reflective, shaping students not just as learners, but as engaged citizens attuned to the past’s relevance to the present. At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

1. Select appropriate spaces in their respective contexts that can be sites of memorialization.

2. Design pedagogically sound learning experiences in spaces of memory.
